in my reading of those other conflicts, religious themes were huge. especially in northern ireland.

the main thing, though, is that terrorism is politically motivated. secular causes (oppression, economic deprivation, lack of freedom) spur it. joe stack is a terrorist by any definition. doesn’t matter if he was irreligious or not.

I suppose the counter-argument is that ‘al-Q’ types invoke Allah and Muhammad, Qur’an and sunna, when making their statements, whereas the Northern Ireland, or other conflicts you note, were ‘light’ on religious themes (they certainly existed).
